Ingredients
- 2 pounds pizza dough
- 1/4 cup pizza toppings optional, of your choice
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
- 1 whole egg beaten
- 2 tablespoons parmesan cheese grated
- Italian seasoning to taste
- pizza sauce optional, warmed, for dipping
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F, allowing a pizza stone to get hot while it preheats. Alternatively, if you don't own a pizza stone, place a baking sheet in the oven.
- Cut the dough into 8 equal-sized portions.
- Roll the dough portions flat and fill each portion with about 1/4 cup of your toppings of choice.
- Sprinkle the toppings with as much of the mozzarella cheese as you like.
- Fold the dough back over the toppings and seal with a fork.
- Place the calzones on parchment paper.
- Using a knife, make a slit on top of the calzones so that steam is able to escape during baking. Using a pastry brush, brush the calzones with the beaten egg.
- Finish with a sprinkle of the parmesan cheese and a dusting of the Italian seasoning.
- Transfer the calzones on the parchment paper to the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet.
- Bake until the crust is golden brown, about 12-15 minutes.
- Allow the calzones to cool slightly.
- Serve with warm pizza sauce for dipping.
