Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 cups frozen shredded hash brown potatoes thawed
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt divided
  • 1 cup JarlsbergĀ® cheese shredded
  • 1 (1-inch-thick 1 1/2-pound) beef top sirloin steak, cut into 4 portions
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives minced, for garnished

Directions

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter.
  • Add the onions to the melted butter and cook, while stirring, until tender, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the hash browns and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and spread it out evenly in the skillet.
  • Reduce the heat to medium and let the hash browns cook undisturbed until the bottom has lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  • Turn the hash browns and cook until the hash browns are heated through and the bottom has lightly browned, about 5-6 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the cheese over the hash browns and immediately cover the skillet.
  • Transfer the skillet from the heat and keep it warm.
  • Season the steaks with the remaining salt and the pepper.
  • Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  • Add the steaks to the hot grill and cook, covered, until the steaks reach an internal temperature of 135 degrees F for medium-rare, about 5-7 minutes per side.
  • Transfer the steaks from the heat.
  • Top each steak with 1/4 of the cheesy hash browns.
  • Serve garnished with the chives.
