Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons butter divided
  • 2 large sweet onions sliced
  • 1 tablespoon water optional
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons beef base such as Better than Boullion®, divided
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce divided
  • kosher salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 24 slider buns
  • 12-16 ounces Gruyère or Swiss cheese shredded
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter.
  • Add the onions to the melted butter, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are lightly caramelized, about 25-30 minutes. If the onions start to look dry or burnt, add the water.
  • In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with 1/2 of the beef base and 1/2 of the Worcestershire sauce.
  • Season the beef mixture with the salt and the pepper.
  • Add the beef mixture to the onions.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high and cook the beef mixture, breaking it up and mixing it into the onions, until browned.
  • Drain the excess grease from the beef mixture.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  • Separate the tops from the bottoms of the slider buns.
  • Arrange the slider bun bottoms tightly on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Evenly distribute the beef mixture over the bottom buns.
  • Top the beef mixture with the cheese and cover with the top buns.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the remaining butter with the remaining beef base in the microwave.
  • Stir the remaining Worcestershire sauce into the butter mixture until it is well-combined.
  • Use a pastry brush to brush the butter mixture evenly over the top buns.
  • Sprinkle the buns with the sesame seeds, the thyme, the onion powder, and the garlic powder.
  • Bake the sliders until the cheese fully melts and the bun tops are lightly brown, about 20 minutes.
  • Serve.
