Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup white onion finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- kosher salt to taste
- freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1 cup Italian breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg beaten
- 3 cups prepared garlic mashed potatoes homemade or store-bought, cooled
- 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese grated
- 1/3 cup bacon cooked and crumbled
- fresh parsley optional, to taste, chopped, for serving
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Grease an 8-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, add the ground beef, the onions, the garlic, the brown sugar, and the Worcestershire sauce and using your clean hands, mix gently but thoroughly until it is just combined.
- Generously season the beef mixture with the salt and the pepper.
- Add the breadcrumbs and the egg to the beef mixture and, using your hands mix gently but thoroughly until combined.
- Add the beef mixture to the prepared baking dish, pressing it gently into an even layer.
- Evenly spread the garlic mashed potatoes over the beef mixture in the baking dish.
- Evenly sprinkle the cheese and the bacon over the mashed potatoes.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake until the beef is cooked through, about 30 minutes.
- Discard the foil and bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10-15 minutes.
- Serve garnished with the parsley.
