Ingredients

For the bake:

  • 1 (18-ounce) package Hawaiian sweet rolls cut horizontally
  • 12 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 1 (15.5-ounce) can sloppy Joe sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar packed
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 3/4 teaspoon pepper

For the glaze:

  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar packed
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried onion minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds
  • dill pickle slices optional, to taste, for topping

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Coat a 9x13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Place the bottom half of the Hawaiian rolls in the prepared pan.
  • Top the bottom roll layer in the baking pan with 1/2 of the cheese slices.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the beef and the onions and cook, while crumbling the beef and stirring occasionally, until the meat is no longer pink and the onions are tender, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Add the sloppy Joe sauce, 1 tablespoon of the brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of the soy sauce, and the pepper into the ground beef mixture and cook, while stirring, until well-combined, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Evenly spoon the sloppy Joe mixture over the cheese layer in the pan.
  • Top the sloppy Joe layer with the remaining cheese slices.
  • Top the cheese layer with the top half of the rolls.
  • In a small bowl, add the melted butter, the remaining brown sugar, the Dijon mustard, the remaining soy sauce, the garlic powder, and the dried onion and whisk until combined into a glaze.
  • Brush the glaze over the tops of the prepared sloppy Joe sandwiches.
  • Sprinkle the sesame seeds and the black sesame seeds evenly over top of the casserole.
  • Bake until the roll tops are golden and the cheese has melted, about 15-20 minutes.
  • Serve with the sliced pickles.
