Ingredients
For the bread:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 large eggs room temperature
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/3 cup canola oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups tart apples chopped and peeled
For the topping:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons walnuts chopped
- 1/3 cup butter cold
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Grease two 8x4-inch loaf pans.
- In a large bowl, combine the 3 cups of the flour, 1 1/2 cups of the sugar, the baking powder, the salt, the baking soda, and the ground cinnamon.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, the applesauce, the canola oil, and the vanilla.
- Stir the wet ingredients mixture into the dry ingredients mixture until just moistened.
- Fold in the apples.
- Transfer the batter to the prepared loaf pans.
- Combine the remaining flour, the remaining sugar, and the walnuts.
- Cut the butter into the walnut mixture until crumbly.
- Sprinkle the topping mixture over the batter.
- Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaves comes out clean, about 45-55 minutes.
- Cool for 10 minutes, then transfer the loaves from the pans to a wire rack.
- Serve.
