Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound mild Italian pork sausage casing removed
- 3 cloves garlic chopped
- 1 pound bowtie pasta
- 3 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 4 cups small broccoli florets
- 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes drained of oil and julienned
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese plus more for serving, grated
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- red chili flakes optional, to taste, and for serving
Directions
- Heat a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the olive oil and the sausage to the pot and cook, breaking into small pieces, until golden brown and no longer pink, about 6 minutes.
- With a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked sausage to a plate and set aside.
- Lower the heat to medium and add the garlic to the same pot. Cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Add the pasta, the broth, the water, the oregano, the salt, and the pepper to the garlic and bring to a simmer.
- Lower the heat to medium or medium-low to keep the pasta mixture simmering, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes.
- Stir the broccoli into the pasta mixture.
- Cover the pot and cook until the pasta and broccoli are just tender, stirring halfway through, about 5 minutes.
- Uncover the pot and add the sun-dried tomatoes, the heavy cream, and the cooked sausage.
- Cook the pasta and sausage mixture until heated through, about 1 minute.
- Transfer the pasta and sausage mixture from the heat and stir in the parmesan cheese and the lemon juice.
- Serve topped with more of the parmesan and the red chili flakes.
