Ingredients
- 10 large apples quartered
- 1 orange halved
- 4 cinnamon sticks plus more, to taste, for garnish
- 1 teaspoon cloves
- 1 teaspoon whole allspice
- 1 whole nutmeg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
- water to taste
Directions
- In a large stockpot over medium heat, add the apples, the orange halves, 4 of the cinnamon sticks, the cloves, the allspice, the nutmeg, and the brown sugar.
- Cover with the water by at least 2 inches. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat.
- Simmer, covered, for 2 hours.
- Remove the orange halves, then use a potato masher or wooden spoon to mash the apples.
- Return the mixture to a simmer and let it simmer uncovered for 1 hour more.
- Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer, pressing on solids with a wooden spoon to squeeze all juices out. Discard the solids.
- Serve warm with the extra cinnamon sticks.
