  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar plus more, to taste

For the casserole:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 onion diced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 3 cups frozen hash brown potatoes diced
  • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese shredded

Optional, for topping:

  • iceberg lettuce to taste, shredded
  • pickles to taste
  • white onions to taste, diced
  • hamburger bun croutons to taste, toasted
  • sesame seeds to taste

Directions

  • In a medium bowl, add the mayonnaise, the sweet pickle relish, the white vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon of the garlic powder, the onion powder, the paprika, the turmeric, and 1 teaspoon of the sugar and whisk to combine.
  • Taste the sauce mixture and add the extra sugar, as needed. Set the sauce mixture aside.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil.
  • Add the ground beef to the hot oil and cook, while stirring and crumbling, until it is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the diced 1/2 onion to the beef and cook, while stirring, until the onions are softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the Worcestershire sauce, the remaining garlic powder, the salt, and the black pepper to the beef mixture and stir to combine.
  • Add 1/2 of the sauce mixture to the beef mixture and stir to combine.
  • In the bottom of the prepared baking dish, add the hash brown potatoes and spread them out evenly.
  • Top the potato layer with the meat mixture, spreading it out evenly.
  • Sprinkle 1/2 of the cheese over the meat layer.
  • Drizzle 1/4 cup of the remaining sauce mixture over the cheese layer.
  • Top the sauce layer with the remaining cheese.
  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake until the cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
  • Serve with the lettuce, the pickles, the extra onions, the bun croutons, the sesame seeds, and the remaining sauce mixture.
