Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 cup mushrooms diced
  • 1 cup onions diced
  • 1 (0.87-ounce) brown gravy mix
  • 1 (10.5-ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 (8-ounce) package instant mashed potato mix butter and herb flavored

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef.
  • Cook the beef until no pink remains, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the mushrooms and the onions to the ground meat in the pan and cook until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Drain the fat from the pan.
  • Add the gravy mix and the cream of mushroom soup to the pan, stirring until all of the meat is coated.
  • Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  • Into a large saucepan, add the water and the butter.
  • Bring the butter mixture to a boil on the stove-top.
  • Once the butter mixture is boiling, immediately transfer the saucepan from the heat and gently stir in the milk and the mashed potato mix.
  • Leave the mashed potato mixture to sit for 1 minute.
  • Stir the potatoes and spread them on top of the meat mixture in the baking dish.
  • Bake until the potatoes start to brown around the edges, about 15-20 minutes.
  • Let the casserole rest for at least 5 minutes.
  • Slice and serve.
