Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper with more for optional garnish
- 2 cups milk not skim
- 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
- 5 cups potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup onion chopped
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
- Grease a 2-quart, oven-safe dish.
- Using a large pan over low heat on the stove-top, melt the butter.
- Once the butter is melted, stir in the flour, the salt, and the pepper until the mixture is smooth and the raw flour smell disappears.
- Then, gradually add in the milk and bring it to a boil.
- Cook and stir the mixture for about 2 minutes, until it has thickened.
- Remove the pan from the heat.
- Stir in the cheddar cheese until it has completely melted.
- Add in the potatoes and onion.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared dish.
- Cover the dish and bake the potatoes for approximately 1 hour.
- Then, uncover and continue baking until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 30-40 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and garnish with more pepper.
- Serve hot.
