Ingredients

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons parsley freshly chopped, plus more for garnish
  • kosher salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the casserole:

  • 1 baguette sliced into 3/4-inch-thick pieces
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • kosher salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 2 cups mozzarella shredded and divided
  • 3 cups marinara sauce

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, 2 cloves of the garlic, the egg, the breadcrumbs, and the parsley.
  • Season the mixture generously with the salt and the pepper, then stir together until just combined.
  • Form the meat mixture into 30 evenly sized balls.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil.
  • Cook the meatballs in the hot oil in batches until they are cooked through at 140 degrees F, about 6-7 minutes.
  • Drain the meatballs on a paper-towel-lined plate.
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Place the baguette slices in an even layer in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • In a medium bowl, stir together the melted butter, the remaining garlic, and the Italian seasoning.
  • Season the butter mixture with the salt and the pepper.
  • Brush the butter mixture over the baguette slices.
  • Layer 1 cup of the mozzarella over the baguette slices.
  • Layer on an even layer of the marinara sauce, the meatballs, and the remaining mozzarella, in that order.
  • Bake until the cheese is melty, about 12-15 minutes.
  • Garnish with the remaining parsley and serve.
