Ingredients

  • 8 (4-ounce) chicken breasts boneless and skinless
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup root beer
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • hamburger buns to taste, for serving
  • coleslaw optional, to taste, for serving

Directions

  • In a slow cooker, add the chicken breasts.
  • In a small bowl, add the onion powder, the garlic powder, the chili powder, the salt, and the black pepper and stir to combine.
  • Evenly sprinkle the spice mixture over the chicken breasts.
  • Evenly pour the root beer and the barbecue sauce over the seasoned chicken breasts.
  • Cover the slow cooker and cook until the chicken breasts reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F, about 3-4 hours on high or about 6-8 hours on low.
  • Transfer the chicken breasts to a cutting board and using two forks, shred the chicken.
  • Add the shredded chicken to the cooking liquids in the slow cooker and stir to combine.
  • Evenly add the shredded chicken to each of the bottom buns.
  • Close the sandwiches with the top buns.
  • Serve with the coleslaw.
