The brightness of orange juice and the excitement of tequila are enhanced by a secret weapon; a homemade lemon-ginger syrup that's sweet, but with a spicy punch and an electric tang! The Morning Margarita is morning-person-energy in liquid form!

Ingredients

For the lemon-ginger simple syrup:

2 cups water
2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons ground ginger
1 cup lemon juice

For the cocktail:

lime wheels optional, to taste
coarse salt optional, to taste
ice to taste
3 ounces tequila
4 ounces orange juice
ground cayenne pepper optional, to taste, for garnish

Directions

In a saucepan over medium-high heat, add the water, the sugar, the ground ginger, and the lemon juice and stir to combine.
Bring the sugar mixture to a boil.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the sugar is completely dissolved and the syrup thickens slightly, about 10 minutes.
Transfer the saucepan from the heat and allow the lemon-ginger simple syrup to cool.
Rub the rim of the intended serving glass with one of the lime wheels.
Add the coarse salt to a plate or shallow bowl. Place the lime-coated glass rim into the salt.
In a cocktail shaker and in a rocks glass, add the ice.
Add the tequila, 1 1/2 tablespoons of the lemon-ginger simple syrup, and the orange juice to the cocktail shaker. Store the remaining lemon-ginger simple syrup in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Cover the shaker and shake vigorously to combine.
Strain the cocktail into the prepared rocks glass.
Garnish with the cayenne and the lime wheels and serve.
