Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
- 4 cups whole milk
- 2 cups half-and-half
- 3 ounces bittersweet chocolate chopped
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- ice cubes to taste
- cold water to taste
- 3 ounces white chocolate melted
- whipped cream optional, to taste, for topping
Directions
- In a mixing bowl, add the sugar, the cocoa, the cornstarch, and the salt and whisk to combine.
- Slowly pour the milk into the cocoa mixture, while whisking constantly, until combined.
- Slowly pour the half-and-half into the cocoa mixture, while whisking, until it is smooth.
- Pour the cocoa mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a saucepan.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the cocoa mixture to a boil, while whisking constantly.
- Gently boil the cocoa mixture, while whisking, until just hot, about 2 minutes.
- Turn off the heat.
- Add the bittersweet chocolate and the vanilla extract to the cocoa mixture and stir to combine.
- Pour the chocolate mixture into a large bowl.
- Fill a second large bowl with the ice cubes.
- Nestle the bowl with the chocolate mixture into the ice cubes.
