Ingredients
For the meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons parsley freshly chopped, plus more for garnish
- kosher salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
For the casserole:
- 1 baguette sliced into 3/4-inch-thick pieces
- 4 tablespoons butter melted
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- kosher salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 2 cups mozzarella shredded and divided
- 3 cups marinara sauce
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, 2 cloves of the garlic, the egg, the breadcrumbs, and the parsley.
- Season the mixture generously with the salt and the pepper, then stir together until just combined.
- Form the meat mixture into 30 evenly sized balls.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil.
- Cook the meatballs in the hot oil in batches until they are cooked through at 140 degrees F, about 6-7 minutes.
- Drain the meatballs on a paper-towel-lined plate.
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- Place the baguette slices in an even layer in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, stir together the melted butter, the remaining garlic, and the Italian seasoning.
- Season the butter mixture with the salt and the pepper.
- Brush the butter mixture over the baguette slices.
- Layer 1 cup of the mozzarella over the baguette slices.
- Layer on an even layer of the marinara sauce, the meatballs, and the remaining mozzarella, in that order.
- Bake until the cheese is melty, about 12-15 minutes.
- Garnish with the remaining parsley and serve.
