Ingredients

For the brownies:

  • 1 cup plus 3 tablespoons butter cubed
  • 3/4 cup baking cocoa
  • 4 large eggs room temperature
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 6 tablespoons butter softened
  • 2 2/3 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 cup baking cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk 2%, plus more as needed

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • In a saucepan, melt 1 cup plus 3 tablespoons of butter.
  • Transfer the saucepan from the heat.
  • Stir in 3/4 cup cocoa and allow the mixture to cool.
  • In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until blended.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the egg mixture.
  • Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla and the cooled chocolate mixture until well blended.
  • Spread the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  • Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 25-28 minutes. If in doubt, lean towards underbaking rather than overbaking the brownies.
  • Allow the brownies to cool in the pan on a wire rack.
  • In a large bowl, beat the remaining butter and confectioners' sugar until light and fluffy, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Beat in the remaining cocoa and vanilla.
  • Add enough milk to achieve a spreadable consistency. You want it to be easily spreadable but not runny.
  • Spread the frosting over the cooled brownies.
  • Cut into bars and serve.
