Ingredients
- 2 (16-ounce) packages frozen broccoli florets
- 1 (14.4-ounce) package pearl onions
- 1/2 cup butter divided
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- 2 cups 2% milk
- 6 ounces cream cheese cubed
- 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
- 2 cups soft breadcrumbs
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Grease a 13x9-inch baking dish.
- In a pot, cook the broccoli in 1 inch of water over high heat until almost tender, about 4 minutes. Drain the water.
- In another pot, cook the onions in 1-inch of water over high heat until almost tender, about 3-4 minutes. Drain.
- Transfer the broccoli and the onions to the prepared baking dish.
- In a large saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of the butter.
- Whisk the flour, the salt, and the pepper into the butter until smooth.
- Gradually whisk the milk into the flour mixture.
- Bring the flour mixture to a boil, cook and stir until thickened, about 1-2 minutes.
- Reduce the heat.
- Stir the cream cheese into the sauce mixture until blended.
- Add the sauce mixture to the veggie mixture and gently stir to coat.
- Sprinkle the bake with the cheddar cheese.
- Melt the remaining butter and toss it with the breadcrumbs.
- Sprinkle the breadcrumbs mixture over the casserole.
- Bake, uncover, until the topping is golden brown, about 25-30 minutes.
- Serve.
