Ingredients

For the burgers:

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded, room temperature
  • 4 soft hamburger buns

Optional toppings:

  • tomatoes to taste, sliced
  • red onion to taste, sliced
  • lettuce leaves to taste

Directions

  • Fill a large pot or a large deep skillet with enough water so that it comes up to the bottom of a steamer or a cooling rack with the legs inside the pot or skillet, ensuring the water does not touch it.
  • Bring the water to a boil.
  • Mix the ground beef, the Worcestershire sauce, the salt, and the pepper together thoroughly but gently.
  • Form the meat mixture into four patties.
  • Using a spatula, place the patties on the steamer or rack and cover the pan.
  • Let the burgers steam until cooked through, about 7 minutes.
  • Turn off the burner.
  • Divide the shredded cheese between the burgers evenly, then quickly close the pan and let them steam again until the cheese is melted, about 2 minutes.
  • Warm or toast the buns.
  • Place the steamed burgers on the buns.
  • Top with the tomatoes, the red onion, and the lettuce and serve!
